Our Contribution

Discussions

We were involved on the project from its very early stage, helping to shape the creative. Collaborating closely with the Production team, our role was to decipher the narrative’s visual language and help in the overall direction of the VFX. We explored the show’s universe, across the key elements to bring the visual to life.

Osaka City Map

Early developmental concept art exploration for the city of Osaka. This were used for setting the scene in the initial episodes of the show, effectively establishing the context for the actions and sequences unfolding within the narrative.

Ajiro Coast Map

Designing the world map 🗺️ for a production is crucial because it helps the entire crew — from production to post — understand exactly where each key moment takes place. When these elements aren’t properly laid out, it can lead to significant continuity problems that disrupt the storytelling flow. 🎥

This concept art map served as a vital guide for the production team, aiding in their visual narration and planning throughout the project. It ensured that every location was consistent and aligned with the script, bringing coherence to the narrative and allowing the team to focus on creating memorable scenes. 🎬

World maps play a vital role in any production by providing a visual blueprint that keeps all departments on the same page. They establish a clear framework for storytelling, help maintain continuity, and allow everyone to visualize the environment and dynamics of the story. It’s more than just a map — it’s a tool that transforms words on a page into a vivid, cohesive world.

Edo City

We had the privilege of designing the concept art for Edo City, a significant location in the show. To ensure historical accuracy, we  matched every detail to Edo’s rich cultural heritage.

To bring this to life, we developed a custom city generator using Blender’s geometry nodes, enabling us to create an authentic and vibrant representation of the city in the time period.

Edo Palace

Our team focused on capturing architectural authenticity and historical accuracy, using a custom building generator developed with Blender’s geometry nodes. We  researched every detail, from the construction methods to the materials used, ensuring the design perfectly reflected the period’s accuracy.

This detailed concept art played a crucial role in visual discussions during production and the translation into post-VFX, bringing the beautiful world of Edo to life.

Palace Approach

Designing Toranaga’s approach to the palace was crucial for storytelling, marking a pivotal moment in the narrative. This sequence had to accurately reflect how such events might have unfolded, capturing the gravity of his entrance into the Edo city palace.

We planned every visual element, from the surrounding environment to the mood, to establish the significance of this moment and to ensure it felt both authentic and impactful, setting the stage for the drama.

Encampment

Our encampment design needed to reflect the historical reality of an army in the time period. We carefully structured the layout according to military hierarchy, from Toranaga’s quarters to areas for generals, training, and cooking. The muddy terrain, shaped by the constant movement of thousands of soldiers, and the cleared tree lines added authenticity.

Additionally, the landscape was crafted to align with the planned landslide sequence, ensuring continuity and a compelling visual narrative.

the landslide needed to be immense to convey its dramatic impact. We studied the dynamics of landslides, focusing on terrains most susceptible to such events and the conditions that trigger them. Drawing inspiration from real-life incidents like the Hope Slide in BC, we analyzed its scale and aftermath. We also incorporated footage and elements from these sources, ensuring the scene’s authenticity while capturing the sheer force and chaos of a massive landslide.

Previz - PostViz

we created detailed visualizations in both previz and post-viz, which served as essential guides from pre-production through post-VFX. These visualizations helped align everyone—from the showrunners to the editorial and VFX teams—ensuring that the impact of every effect was accurately executed and consistent throughout the production process.

A huge thank you to the Shogun Production Team for bringing us on board and trusting us to help shape the visual development of this incredible Emmy-winning show. It’s been an honor to contribute to such a remarkable project!
